THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Chanler at Cliff Walk
The lawn at The Chanler runs straight to Newport's Cliff Walk, and guests can step off the grass onto the path toward Easton's Beach without touching a car. The house dates to 1873, built by a New York congressman for his family and originally named Cliff Lawn; it was the first cottage of its kind at the north end of the Walk. The Shufelt family bought it in 2000 and spent three years restoring the Victorian craftsmanship room by room, and that restoration shows: across three floors and twenty rooms, no two are alike. Some pull from Georgian or Moroccan design, others from Federal or French Provincial lines, and each keeps its own fireplace, a detail few houses this size manage to give every room. Two restaurants handle the food, one built around a custom French cooking suite with ocean views, the other leaning toward garden cocktails and coastal plates. A small spa runs massage, sauna, and aromatherapy, and bicycles, classic and electric, are free to take along the shoreline. Concierge, tour assistance, and multilingual staff cover the practical side, and an EV charger sits on site for guests who drive up. Pets are not allowed, and a $100 nightly deposit is taken at check-in. This suits a couple who wants a walkable stretch of coast and a room with real character, not a traveler chasing a large, anonymous hotel and a crowded pool deck. Twenty rooms across three floors keeps the house intimate rather than efficient, which is the trade a guest is making here: fewer beds, more attention, and a fireplace that was lit for someone else's family a century before it was lit for you. Twenty rooms fill an 1873 Gilded Age house on Newport's Cliff Walk, each styled differently and each with its own fireplace. Complimentary bicycles, a small spa, and two restaurants fill the days between beach walks. Pets stay home, and a $100 nightly deposit applies at check-in.
