THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Holiday House Palm Springs
Herbert W. Burns designed Holiday House in 1951, and the 28-room hotel in downtown Palm Springs still carries his clean midcentury lines, now filtered through a reimagining by Mark D. Sikes and the team behind Sparrows Lodge. What sets it apart from the resort hotels nearby is the art scattered through the property: David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Herb Ritts, Alex Katz and Mr. Brainwash hang on the walls, a Donald Sultan sculpture stands in the garden, and Gio Ponti inspired tilework runs behind the bar. There are no televisions in the rooms, a deliberate choice meant to push guests toward the communal spaces instead, so anyone who wants to disappear into a screen after a day in the sun should look elsewhere. The two-story property sits on just over an acre, with a pool, a garden, and an adults-only policy that keeps children off the premises and lets the bar stay lively into the evening. The Pantry serves a continental breakfast of homemade bread, pastries, fruit and Vittoria coffee, included in the resort fee, and the same room turns into a restaurant for lunch and dinner built around simple American cooking. Wi-Fi, parking, concierge, laundry and dry cleaning are all on hand, and pets can join for an added fee. Walk a few minutes and you reach the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, Annenberg Theatre and Plaza de las Flores, so a car is optional rather than essential. This suits travelers who want a small, design-conscious base with a social pulse, not families or anyone chasing a quiet, anonymous stay. A 1951 midcentury hotel in downtown Palm Springs, reimagined with art by Hockney and Lichtenstein and rooms without televisions. Adults-only, pool-centered, and built for travelers who want design and company over anonymity.
