THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Senato Hotel Milano
Via Senato 22 was a private family residence before it became a 43-room hotel, and the address still reads like one, tucked into the same short stretch of streets as Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, close enough to the fashion houses that guests can walk to a fitting and back before lunch. What sets it apart from the label-hunting hotels nearby is the garden: each spring it turns over to a design installation, an imaginary forest of sculptures for Milan Design Week from Matteo Cibic, an Erik Kessels photography piece for MIA Photo Fair, stripes reworked by Garage Italia during Fashion Week. Senato Caffè draws the same crowd, travellers, designers, people who work the shows, rather than tourists passing through. The 43 rooms across five floors come with minibars, flat-screen televisions, down comforters and bathrooms with rainfall showerheads and bidets; ask for one with a terrace if the garden view matters more than square footage. There's a small gym, a solarium, a doctor on call, and a concierge who has clearly done this before. Breakfast runs 7 to 10:30 and costs extra, parking is nearby rather than on site at 45 euros a day, and a 50-euro-per-day deposit against damages is taken at check-in. Staff move between six languages without missing a beat. This suits someone who wants to be inside Milan's fashion and design circuit without booking a suite the size of an apartment; it will feel small and single-minded to anyone chasing pools, spas or a lobby built for lounging. What lingers isn't the room, it's the garden changing shape every season. A converted family residence between Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, where the garden turns into a design installation every season and Senato Caffè pulls in the same fashion crowd staying upstairs. Forty-three rooms, no pool, no spa, just proximity and a concierge who knows the city cold.
