THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Park Hyatt Milan
Set at Via Tommaso Grossi 1, facing directly onto the mouth of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and close enough to Piazza del Duomo to hear the bells, the Park Hyatt Milano occupies a palazzo built in 1870 and intended, at first, as a hotel, before a long detour as apartments, offices, and finally a bank. Only the shell survived the 2003 conversion. The interiors were handed to Ed Tuttle, the American architect behind Amanpuri and the Park Hyatt Paris Vendôme, who kept the building's Baroque bones and put a contemporary, restrained hotel inside them, opening in October that year as the first Hyatt property in Italy. The hotel counts 106 rooms and suites, among them thirty executive suites of 56 square metres, a Diplomatic Suite that runs to 155 square metres with its own terrace, and a Presidential Suite of up to 270 square metres with two terraces facing the cathedral spires. It has operated under Hyatt's Park Hyatt brand since it opened, and has kept the same architectural language, largely untouched, for over two decades. Travertine and alabaster run through the public rooms, and the carpet in the lobby is cut into a cruciform pattern designed to echo four rose granite urns standing nearby. Gerhard Richter's 1968 painting of the Duomo hangs in the lobby lounge, unbothered by the crowds passing beneath the nine-metre glass dome that covers La Cupola, the all-day dining room. Guest bathrooms lean maximal rather than minimal, several nearly half the size of the bedroom itself, with octagonal stone and glass showers. The fine dining room beneath the dome, once home to Andrea Aprea's two Michelin-starred Vun, was reworked in 2022 into Pellico 3 Milano, a space designed by architect Flaviano Capriotti in tones keyed to ingredients- chestnut, urchin yellow, artichoke green, now run by chef Guido Paternollo with a menu that draws on France, Spain, Greece, and Italy. Mio Lab, the cocktail bar, works from recipes developed with mixologist Oscar Quagliarini and serves pintxos through the aperitivo hour. What it feels like is Milan being Milan: composed, expensively unfussy, and busy with people who have somewhere to be, whether that is a showroom during fashion week or a meeting in the 240 square metre function space upstairs. The service has the kind of consistency that won it Travel + Leisure's Best Service Hotel Worldwide in 2012, and it still shows in small ways, in how quickly a request is met rather than how warmly it is announced. This is not a hotel that performs hospitality. It runs a tight, well-drilled operation inside a handsome shell, and lets the location and the architecture do most of the talking. You should not come if you want the operatic scale of a Venetian palazzo, a pool, or the sense of having escaped the city. This is urban to its core, and during fashion week or the furniture fair it fills with exactly the crowd you would expect, stylish, transactional, moving fast. You should come for a hotel that treats Milan's Baroque instincts with a cool, contemporary hand, that puts you a two-minute walk from the Duomo and the Galleria, and that runs its rooms and its restaurant with the same quiet precision Milan applies to everything else. The short version: A 106-room hotel in a 19th-century Milanese palazzo by architect Ed Tuttle, facing the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, restrained and travertine-lined, built for business, fashion week, and people who prefer competence over performance.
