THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Vico Milano
Corso Genova 11 doesn't look like a hotel from the street; it's a former fashion atelier, itself built inside a factory that once turned out Legnano racing bicycles, and inside there are just seven rooms spread across a single floor, no elevator, no corridor of thirty identical doors. The rooms carry the same handmade attention: Moroccan Zellige tiles in the bathrooms, green marble from the Greek island of Tinos, lighting from FLOS and Moooi, furniture pieces sourced from the 1950s through the 1970s. Standard Suites run 258 square feet, Luxury Suites 291, all facing the city rather than a courtyard. What sets Vico apart from the boutique hotels crowding this end of Milan is the Speakeasy: a bar and restaurant behind an unmarked door, open only to guests staying here, pouring cocktails and modern Italian plates in a room designed rather than decorated. Breakfast is the same register, a slow lounge service of seasonal pastries, local cheeses and properly pulled coffee rather than a buffet line. The concierge deals in specifics too, arranging private boat days on Lake Como, skip-the-line viewings of the Last Supper, and afternoons in Franciacorta's vineyards. This suits someone who wants Milan's Navigli canals and the Duomo within walking distance but has no interest in a lobby full of luggage carts or a gym. It does not suit anyone travelling with mobility needs, since there is no lift and the stairs are part of the deal, or anyone who wants more than seven rooms' worth of company. A cleaning fee applies separately at checkout, worth confirming when booking. Vico doesn't try to be everything Milan offers; it settles for being exactly one thing, done well. Seven rooms on one floor of a former fashion atelier on Corso Genova, with a speakeasy bar reserved for guests only. Design runs to Zellige tiles, Tinos marble and vintage lighting rather than hotel polish. Skip it if stairs are a problem; book it for a quieter version of Milan.
