THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Armani Hotel Milano
Via Manzoni 31 sits within Milan's Quadrilatero della Moda, fifty metres from the Montenapoleone Metro, inside a rationalist palazzo designed by Enrico A. Griffini and completed in 1937, its stone facade giving away nothing of the interior Giorgio Armani built inside it in 2011. This was the second hotel to open under the Armani Hotels & Resorts partnership, following the Armani Hotel Dubai inside the Burj Khalifa, and it remains a joint venture between Giorgio Armani S.p.A. and Emaar Properties, the Dubai developer chaired by Mohamed Alabbar. The hotel holds 95 rooms and suites across the palazzo's upper floors, run day to day by a Lifestyle Department that assigns each arriving guest a single point of contact rather than a front desk queue. Armani designed or personally approved every element inside, from the mother-of-pearl doors to the leather-lined walls, and the palette stays within his register of beige, taupe, and grey, warmed by Silk Georgette, a smooth Asian limestone used across the floors and walls. Rooms carry Armani/Casa furniture and backlit wooden bedheads, and the largest suites, the Signature and Presidential categories at 170 to 200 square metres, run across two floors joined by a sculpted internal staircase; a two-bedroom suite on the sixth floor, at 224 square metres, has its own kitchen and a private terrace facing the Duomo. Public life happens on the seventh and eighth floors, inside a glazed structure staff call the "hat": Armani/Ristorante and the Armani/Lounge with its Armani/Bamboo Bar occupy the seventh, backlit in onyx, with the Armani/SPA and its Turkish bath one floor above. Staying here reads less like checking into a hotel than being absorbed into a system, the Lifestyle Manager anticipating needs before they're voiced, the tonal discipline of the design extending to the size of the cotton buds. It suits a guest who wants Milan's fashion district at close range, who has come for Montenapoleone and Brera and doesn't want to negotiate a lobby to reach it, and who finds comfort in restraint applied with total consistency rather than warmth applied unevenly. The building itself, austere from the street, does the opposite once you're through the doors. You should not come if you want the eccentricity or patina of an old Milanese palazzo, or a hotel with a personality distinct from its founder's own name on the door; this is Armani's aesthetic applied without deviation, which some find monastic rather than restful. You should come for the location inside the fashion quadrilateral, for interiors that never break their own logic, and for a level of anticipatory service that most hotels this size can't sustain. The short version: A 95 room and suite hotel in a 1937 Griffini palazzo on Via Manzoni, designed floor to fixture by Giorgio Armani, with a glazed rooftop restaurant, lounge, and spa, and a Lifestyle Manager assigned to every guest.
