THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Casa MãE
Casa Mãe sits in the old town of Lagos, close enough to Sao Sebastiao Church that guests can have their morning coffee looking out at the city from the window before setting off to explore. The 22-room hotel is spread across three buildings, each with its own mood, Boho chic, Minimalist, Vintage, blending the historical architecture of Lagos with contemporary design and furniture made to measure by local artisans. What separates it from other hotels on this coast is the food: a 6000-square-metre garden and 200 chickens supply the Orta restaurant's farm-to-table kitchen, and there is deliberately no breakfast buffet, quality over quantity is the house rule, part of a wider sustainability ethos that runs to organic teas, natural wines and homemade almond milk. Rooms range from a Standard through a Deluxe to two Baluarte suites with private saltwater pools and walk-in rain showers open to the sky, while the three-storey Villa Paiol nearby adds a rooftop pool over the old city for groups of up to six adults, though its staircase means children under ten aren't permitted. On-site, there is a spa center, a fitness center, a barbeque area, a conference hall, and an airport transfer arranged for 180 euros each way. This suits people willing to trade a groaning buffet table for produce grown steps away, and couples or small groups after privacy rather than resort scale. Families with young children will find the villa off-limits, and anyone set on a big breakfast spread should look elsewhere. Casa Mãe runs on slower mornings and Algarve light, staying open through Lagos's quiet winter months, when the coast empties out and the hotel's own rhythm takes over. A 22-room hotel in old Lagos where a garden and 200 chickens feed the restaurant instead of a buffet line, and rooms run from simple doubles to Baluarte suites with private saltwater pools. It keeps its own slow rhythm long after the summer crowds have gone.
