THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Quinta do Furao
Quinta do Furão stands on a cliff top at Achada do Gramacho in Santana, on Madeira's northeast coast, with the Atlantic filling the view below. It operates as much as a wine estate as a hotel: the estate's own adega lets guests taste and buy four styles of Madeira wine, from dry Sercial to dark, sweet Malvasia, and its Vineyards rooms open onto balconies overlooking the vines they're named for. That cellar and those vineyard views set it apart from the resort clusters around Funchal, a forty-minute drive south, with the airport twenty minutes away. The restaurant, open since 1993, serves Madeiran dishes alongside international plates in a room warmed by two fireplaces under a timber ceiling, or on a sheltered veranda facing the coast. A stone-walled pub, a bakery, the Four Seasons bar for cocktails, and Il Furetto, a pizzeria running since 2023 with naturally fermented dough, round out the choices. The hotel is modest in scale, 45 rooms across three floors, built in 1999, with indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, a solarium, a fitness center and gym, a spa center, and a playroom for children. Staff speak English and German. It suits people who want Madeira's quieter, more traditional north rather than Funchal's promenade, and who'd rather spend an afternoon in a wine cellar than by a pool. It will not suit anyone wanting nightlife on the doorstep or a short walk into a town center. Check-in is from 2pm, checkout by noon, and the city tax applies to guests over twelve. What lingers is the cellar, steps from your room, stocked with wine grown just outside. A clifftop wine estate on Madeira's quieter north coast, with its own cellar for tasting and buying Madeira wine and a restaurant running since 1993. It suits travelers who want Madeira's traditional north over Funchal's resort strip, not those chasing nightlife on the doorstep.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

In the estate's wine cellar, guests can taste and buy the four classic styles of Madeira wine named for their grape varieties: dry Sercial, off-dry Verdelho, richly aromatic medium-sweet Bual, and the deep, sweet Malvasia traditionally poured with coffee at the end of a meal.
This is a quiet, adults-focused atmosphere; pets are not permitted on the premises.
