Viana do Castelo is the kind of northern Portuguese city that rewards people who arrive without a fixed idea of what to do. It is on the Lima estuary where the river meets the Atlantic, with a Manueline old town, a hilltop basilica designed by the architects of Sacré-Cœur, a working port, and the Camino de Santiago passing through it. The coast here is the Costa Verde, greener and wilder than anything further south, and the surf at Cabedelo beach, a short ferry ride across the estuary, is the reason people come back. FeelViana is in the pine forest at Cabedelo, 200 metres from the beach, a wood-clad contemporary hotel that sits in the landscape as though it grew there rather than was placed in it. The hotel has 46 rooms and 9 bungalows, all with private terraces looking into the pines or through the trees toward the sea, and a walk along the boardwalk through the forest to reach the Atlantic. The design is deliberate and restrained, natural materials, soft tones, nothing that competes with the landscape it is built into. The sports centre is the other half of the proposition: kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling, stand-up paddleboarding on the river, cable wakeboarding, cycling with high-grade Scott bike rentals, a pump track, and guided gravel routes through the surrounding hills. The spa has an indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath, and treatment rooms, and the restaurant serves a seasonal, locally sourced menu, with a tavern for sharing plates and a beach bar in the pines for cocktails in the evening. This is a hotel for people who want to be in the water or on a bike for most of the day and eat and sleep well at the end of it. It is not a resort in the conventional sense, it is closer to a base camp with good beds and proper food. The Romaria da Senhora d'Agonia in August, one of Portugal's most elaborate folk festivals, happens in Viana do Castelo and is worth planning a visit around if the dates align.
