THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Canto de Luz
On Rua do Almada, in Porto's Cedofeita quarter just north of the Torre dos Clérigos, an eighteenth century merchant's townhouse spent much of the twentieth century as commercial premises for the Pelikan company of Hanover, the German stationers known for their fountain pens, before falling into disrepair and standing roofless for years. In 2008, André and Brigitte, a French couple with no prior hotel experience, found the ruin and spent five years restoring it, opening it in 2013 as a maison d'hôtes of twelve suites and a self-contained two bedroom villa, Villa Almada, set into the garden with its own private pool. André and Brigitte ran the house themselves until 2019, when they retired and passed it into new hands, the routines they built, the daily changing breakfast, the open kitchen, the family welcome, still setting the tone. The suites are painted in soft grey with industrial touches, exposed stone, black metal window frames, softened by original artwork and plants, and each has a Nespresso machine, a kettle stocked with Pukka teas, and Rituals bath products in a stone tiled bathroom with a walk in rainfall shower. Two of the larger apartments, the Urban Retreat and the City Retreat, come with full kitchens for longer stays. Breakfast, served in the Orangerie and on the garden terrace, changes daily with what the Bolhão market has that morning and always includes bread and pastries brought in from Padaria Ribeira, one of the city's oldest bakeries. There is no restaurant for lunch or dinner, but a self-serve wine machine in the garden and a staff list of restaurant recommendations fill the gap. This is a hosted house more than a hotel, twelve suites and a villa run with the informality of people who live upstairs, which suits families particularly well: sofa beds and connecting rooms for children, a basket of toys, scooters to borrow, and babysitting arranged with a few hours' notice. The Old Town setting, cobbled and close, means Rua das Flores, the Ribeira waterfront and the Torre dos Clérigos are all a walk away, so the days fall into a rhythm of breakfast on site and everything else on foot. You should not come if you want a restaurant on site, a spa, or the anonymity of a larger hotel, since this is a small house where the owners and staff know your name by the second morning and there is no getting around that. You should come for the version of Porto that plays out from a family's restored home: a real breakfast, a garden with a wine machine, and a two bedroom villa with its own pool if you are travelling as a group. The short version: A restored eighteenth century townhouse in Porto's Old Town with twelve suites and a garden villa, opened in 2013 by a French couple after five years of restoration, built around breakfast, family stays, and walking distance to everything.
