THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Gara Rock
Down a web of high-hedged Devon lanes, past East Portlemouth and onto the cliffs above the entrance to the Salcombe estuary, a former coastguard station has been reinvented as one of the most dramatically positioned small hotels in the South West. Gara Rock looks straight out across the English Channel, with the South West Coast Path running directly past the door and Mill Bay's pale sand visible below. There are around 30 rooms in the main building, plus a scattering of three-layout residences with their own kitchens (designed for families who want to make breakfast on their own schedule), and a handful of statement suites named for the building's coastguard past, The Signal House, The Penthouse, and the genuinely hidden Secret Suite. The aesthetic is coastal boutique done with restraint, the kind of pale, washed-linen, ceramic-lamp interiors that photograph beautifully and stay calm in real life. The Wild Rock Spa is small and properly considered, the indoor pool has floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea, an outdoor pool opens in summer with a view down the coast, and a private cinema room handles the rainy afternoons that South Devon will inevitably hand you. There are two restaurants, the main one an AA Rosette kitchen working closely with the hotel's own kitchen garden and South Hams producers, a more relaxed Pudding Bar and Lounge for terrace cocktails at sunset, and an Ox Grill that opens up outside in summer. The Garavan, a converted vintage Citroen, parks itself on the coast path in the warmer months for walkers wanting a flat white with a sea view. This is a hotel that works hardest for couples wanting a clifftop weekend, families who would prefer their luxury self-contained (the residences are the answer), and walkers using the South West Coast Path as a moving spine of their holiday. It is not in Salcombe, it is across the water from Salcombe, which means the small passenger ferry from East Portlemouth is part of the rhythm of your stay, and a good thing. Weddings happen here often, sometimes for up to 180 guests, so check the calendar before you book if you want quiet. You should not come if you want to walk into a town for dinner, if you find true coastal isolation unsettling, or if a private cinema and a kitchen garden cannot make up for being twenty minutes by ferry and foot from the nearest cluster of shops. You should come for the kind of clifftop seclusion that English hotels rarely commit to properly, the South West Coast Path in both directions from the front door, and one of the best sunset terraces in Devon. The short version: A former coastguard station reinvented as a 30-room boutique clifftop hotel above the Salcombe estuary, with a spa, two pools, a cinema room, garden-led cooking, family-friendly residences, and one of the most dramatic positions on the South West Coast Path.
