THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Kinloch Lodge
At the end of a private drive on Kinloch Hill, where the road narrows and the loch opens out below, Kinloch Lodge sits low and white against Skye's southern hills, a 17th-century hunting lodge that has been a family home and, since 1972, a family-run hotel. Godfrey and Claire Macdonald built it into a destination for quiet comfort and serious food, and their daughter Isabella now runs it much the same way, giving the place a continuity few hotels on this island, or anywhere, can claim. Rooms look out over Loch na Dal or the Cuillin mountains, and come with L'Occitane toiletries, flat-screen TVs with DVD players and free Wi-Fi throughout. What sets Kinloch apart is its own kitchen garden and polytunnels, and a natural spring that supplies the water on every table, so a meaningful share of what lands on your plate never left the grounds. The restaurant's reputation for local, seasonal cooking has been decades in the making, and the wine list is built to match it. There's a treatment room for massages, facials, salt scrubs and reflexology, but the real pull is outside: guided fishing, foraging and stalking with Kinloch's own ghillie, walking trails staff will map out for you, and whisky tours to Talisker under an hour away. This suits travellers who want to slow down and eat well, not those chasing beach clubs or a fast city break. Bring boots, not heels. The loch will still be there in the morning, and so, most likely, will a Macdonald. A 17th-century hunting lodge on Skye's Sleat peninsula, family-run since 1972, with its own kitchen garden, spring water and a ghillie for hire. Loch views, L'Occitane bathrooms, and Talisker an hour away. Built for slow food and wild walks, not fast city breaks.
