THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Les Suites at The Cliff Bay
On five nights a week, dinner at Les Suites at The Cliff Bay is served on a pier that reaches into the Atlantic, part of a temporary fix while the hotel's main restaurant, Avista, stays closed. The stand-ins, Sushi by the Sea on the pier and Blue Lagoon at Night on the terrace, sit alongside the Rose Garden and Il Gallo d'Oro elsewhere on the Porto Bay grounds, so nobody actually goes hungry for options. That kind of quiet problem-solving fits a hotel that runs at a scale most competitors don't attempt: 23 suites, built in 2019, tucked inside a larger resort but never swallowed by it. Rooms come with a pillow menu, welcome fruit and house wine on arrival, and a mini-bar restocked daily with water and soft drinks, while guests can move between a heated indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a spa with sauna and steam room, a gym, tennis court, library and billiards room without leaving the property. Families weighing extra beds should know they run 80 EUR a night, and pets aren't permitted, so this isn't the address for a spontaneous multi-generational trip with the dog in tow. The gala dinner's formal dress code and the requirement to pre-register online before arrival also suit planners more than wanderers. What holds it together is the ratio: a small suite count backed by the recreational range of a much bigger resort. Few hotels this size can offer four restaurants, two pools and a golf course within reach, and fewer still would admit, plainly, that the main dining room is closed rather than dress it up. Twenty-three suites inside a larger Porto Bay resort in Funchal come with heated pools, a spa and four restaurants, even as the main dining room stays temporarily closed. Extra beds run 80 EUR nightly and pets aren't allowed, better suited to couples than families with a dog.

Blue Lagoon at Night (daily) — dinners served on the terrace by the sea, featuring a menu adapted from Avista.
In addition, the Rose Garden and Il Gallo d’Oro remain available. Breakfast will be served in these restaurants or via room service.
