Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola
Viale Castagnola runs quiet past the gates of Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola, and behind them a sub-tropical park of palms and banana plants opens onto Lake Lugano. The villa itself dates to 1880, built for a noble Russian family, before the Schnyder von Wartensee family turned it into a guest house in 1885 and the Garzoni family, who took over in 1982, added two floors and shaped it into today's 74-room hotel. It sits in walking distance of Piazza della Riforma, Parco Ciani and the Cantonal Art Museum, and keeps its own ground-floor art gallery, added in 2002 after the purchase of the neighbouring Hotel Du Midi, something few lake hotels can claim. Three restaurants handle the eating: La Rucola for Mediterranean cooking, Le Relais, and Arté al Lago, plus Le Bar for fireside drinks in winter and poolside ones in summer. The wellness floor runs to a heated indoor pool, bio sauna, calidarium, Turkish bath and hydropool, and there's a private lakeside beach and a clay tennis court besides. Rooms are individually styled rather than uniform, with park or lake outlooks and, in many, a balcony, terrace or loggia; a Standard Double runs around 248 square feet, a Junior Suite closer to 484. Families are handled without fuss, with a playroom, babysitting and extra beds available for a fee, and pets are allowed too. None of this suits anyone chasing glass-and-concrete newness or a loud nightlife scene; the mood here, kept by only two families across 140 years, feels closer to a private home that happens to have a spa, three restaurants and a gallery attached. That combination, not the lake view alone, is what brings people back again. A 140-year-old lakeside villa in Lugano, still watched over by only two families, with a ground-floor art gallery, three restaurants and a private beach. Rooms are individually styled rather than uniform, sized from 248 to 484 square feet. Not for anyone after minimalist newness or a loud night out.
