Amerikalinjen

In 1919 the Norwegian America Line opened its headquarters on Jernbanetorget, the building from which thousands of hopeful Norwegians began their journey toward America. A century later that building reopened as Amerikalinjen, a 122-room hotel from Nordic Choice Hotels that keeps that history on display rather than boxed away. What separates it from Oslo's other central hotels is Pier 42, the hotel bar named Best Cocktail Bar in Norway in 2021 and 2022, Hotel Bar of the Year in Norway by the Falstaff Bar Guide for 2026, and home to bartender Adrián Michalčík, named 2022 Global Bartender of the Year. Its concept menu, The Captain's Diary, follows the fictional log of a ship's captain crossing the Atlantic. The intimate jazz club Gustav brings in Felix Peikli and friends every week. Rooms are individually decorated with minibars, and some look onto Haven, the hotel's green, covered courtyard, instead of the street. Breakfast, brunch and dinner run through Atlas Brasserie, and The Little Bakery bakes bagels, tracing a recipe that Polish immigrants carried to New York. A gym, a library and a garden fill out the rest of the building, and pets are welcome for a 500 NOK deposit per stay. This suits someone who wants to be within walking distance of the Opera, the Cathedral and Jernbanetorget without staying somewhere that could be any city, and who won't mind a lively bar some evenings. It won't suit anyone chasing total quiet. Parking nearby costs extra, as does an additional bed.
