THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Continental, Oslo
Stortingsgaten 24, the National Theatre directly across the street, and a lobby lounge hung with Edward Munch lithographs: Hotel Continental has held this corner of central Oslo for four generations, still run by the same family that built it. That continuity shows in the details, like Theatercaféen, which has been the city's meeting point for over a hundred years, and in the five restaurants and bars under one roof, from the fine dining of Eik Annen Etage to the maritime-style Steamen Café for something lighter. The 151 rooms across eight floors are individually decorated rather than templated, each fitted with a minibar, bathrobe, cable TV and a separate shower and bath. In 2025 the hotel earned a Michelin Key, a distinction reserved for extraordinary hotels, and it holds membership in The Leading Hotels of the World. Business travellers get a genuine edge too: a business center, conference hall and meeting rooms sit a five-minute walk from the Royal Palace, and CNBC named it Oslo's best business hotel in 2022. Families with very young children may find the offering thin. Babysitting is on the amenities list, but nothing resembling a kids' club, so the mood leans toward grown-up elegance rather than playroom energy. Anyone wanting a quiet, minimalist retreat should also look elsewhere, since the lobby doubles as a lively local gathering spot where Oslo regulars mix with guests rather than a hushed private space. That's the difference between this and the newer luxury openings around it: they can buy design, but they can't buy four generations of the same family still greeting guests at the door. Family-run for four generations, Hotel Continental sits across from the National Theatre in central Oslo, its 151 rooms individually decorated and its lobby doubling as the city's real meeting point. It earned a Michelin Key in 2025, and suits business travellers and history-lovers more than families with young children.
