THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Carlton Guldsmeden
Carlton Guldsmeden sits on Parkveien in Oslo's Frogner district, close enough to the Royal Palace, the Henrik Ibsen Museum and the Nobel Peace Center that exploring on foot is the natural way to spend an afternoon. It is modest in scale, fifty rooms in total, part of the Guldsmeden Hotels group, with a 24-hour reception desk and a lift. What separates the rooms from the usual Nordic minimalism is the furniture itself: Chesterfield-style pieces and wrought-iron wall lamps that give even the standard categories an opulent, slightly old-fashioned feel, alongside bathrobes, slippers and toiletries as standard. Pets are welcome, and a bridal suite plus family rooms sit alongside the more conventional queen and single categories. After a day of meetings or museums, the sauna and spa offer somewhere to slow down before the restaurant or bar, and breakfast and snacks mean guests don't have to leave the building. Business travellers get two conference rooms and a fax and copy machine, while everyone gets free Wi-Fi through the public areas and English-speaking staff at the desk. Parking is not included, chargeable parking nearby runs to 420 NOK a day, which makes this a better fit for guests arriving without a car than for anyone planning to drive in. It will not suit travellers chasing sweeping views or resort-sized grounds. The appeal is a compact, design-forward hotel in a well-placed Oslo neighbourhood, run with enough personality that a short stay here feels considered rather than default. A 50-room hotel in Oslo's Frogner district, close enough to the Royal Palace and the Henrik Ibsen Museum to explore on foot, with Chesterfield furniture and wrought-iron lamps setting the rooms apart. Pets, a sauna and a bridal suite are all here; free on-site parking is not.
