On any given evening, Riad Kniza's chef is out in the souks by mid-morning, gathering ingredients for a lamb tajine with figs and prunes that only nine tables will taste that night, because orders here must be placed a full day ahead. That kind of scale, eleven rooms across two floors near Bab Doukala in the old medina, is the point. Haj Mohamed Bouskri, one of Marrakech's most renowned antiques dealers, has spent 34 years guiding visitors that have included former U.S. presidents and Hollywood actors; he restored this 18th-century building himself and still runs it with his family, filling the salons with pieces from his own antiques collection. Few riads in the medina can claim that kind of continuity, or an owner who still meets guests personally to help them decide which souks and monuments are worth the walk. Rooms come with air conditioning and in-room safes, and some include an indoor fireplace for cooler nights; guests staying longer can browse the small library, swim in the indoor or outdoor pool, or book a massage in the spa's steam room and sauna. A rooftop terrace and two fountain courtyards supply the calm the photographs promise. None of this suits a family trip: children twelve and under are not permitted, and unmarried couples booking a double should know a marriage certificate is requested at check-in. It suits a couple or solo traveller who wants Marrakech explained by someone who has lived it, within walking distance of Jemaa El Fna and the souks, and who would rather eat at one of nine tables than a full room. Children twelve and under are not permitted, making it one for couples and solo travellers over families.
