THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Royal Mansour Marrakech

King Mohammed VI did not want to build a hotel. He wanted to build Morocco, and then place a hotel inside it. The result, opened in 2010 on six hectares in the heart of Marrakech, is the most serious attempt in the history of hospitality to recreate a traditional medina from scratch: winding alleyways, flower-filled passages, zellige-tiled fountains, lush gardens, and 53 private riads connected by a network of underground corridors through which staff move invisibly so that guests encounter only the silence of the property and each other. The rooms, as a category, do not exist here. Only riads, the smallest of which spans three floors, with a private courtyard, a plunge pool, Baccarat chandeliers, silk carpets woven by local artisans, and an on-call butler who appears when needed and otherwise does not. The dining offer is as considered as the architecture. La Grande Table Marocaine and La Grande Brasserie are both overseen by Hélène Darroze, one of France's most decorated chefs, applying her precision to a Moroccan larder that rewards the attention. Sesamo, by three-Michelin-starred Italian chef Massimiliano Alajmo, is among the more unexpected meals Morocco offers, and the al fresco Le Jardin handles Asian cuisine under the garden's trees. The spa, with its famous birdcage entrance and 2,500 square metres of hammams, treatment rooms, and heated pool, is a destination in itself. Ranked 13th best hotel in the world by the 50 Best Hotels in 2025 and best in Africa, the Royal Mansour is not a hotel that makes claims it cannot support. This is a hotel for people who want Marrakech at its most immersive and its most private, simultaneously inside the medina and entirely apart from it. Jemaa el-Fnaa is a five-minute walk. The souks are closer. Neither is reachable from inside the property, which is the whole point. The short version: Fifty-three private riads on six hectares in the heart of Marrakech, commissioned by King Mohammed VI as a medina within a medina, with four restaurants overseen by Hélène Darroze and Massimiliano Alajmo, and the most considered version of Moroccan hospitality in existence.

What to Know Before You Go

Sesamo, for the surprise

Sesamo, for the surprise

Massimiliano Alajmo's Italian restaurant inside a Moroccan palace is an unlikely combination that delivers completely. Book it for a second evening and order the pasta, which has no business being this good this far from Venice.

The spa entrance

The spa entrance

The birdcage entrance to the 2,500-square-metre spa is one of the great architectural moments in Moroccan hotel-making. Book a traditional hammam and arrive early enough to take the full circuit before the treatment begins.

What to pack

What to pack

A kaftan or djellaba for the riad courtyard at night, something considered for La Grande Table Marocaine, and light layers that cover the shoulders for the souks beyond the walls. The Royal Mansour has an elegance that the wardrobe should answer
