THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Selman Marrakech

Tucked into the Agdal gardens where the Atlas foothills begin, Selman is built around an actual Arabian horse stud farm: not a decorative theme but the owner's genuine passion project that happens to have exceptional rooms attached. You'll spot magnificent horses grazing between the olive groves as you wander the grounds, and the polo facilities are serious enough that professionals train here. This is a hotel with a real point of view, which makes it considerably more interesting than properties trying to be everything to everyone. The architecture is Andalusian-Moorish executed with restraint rather than maximal opulence, which means soaring arches and intricate zellige tilework deployed with an editor's eye rather than thrown at every surface. Museum-quality contemporary art hangs throughout the property (pieces worth actually looking at rather than generic hotel filler), and the design manages to honor traditional Moroccan craftsmanship while feeling utterly contemporary. The suites are genuinely spacious, with vast private terraces facing the Atlas peaks and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the rooms with light. The palette is sophisticated neutrals (creams, taupes, warm woods) that let the mountain views and architectural details do the talking, and the bathrooms are palatial, finished in cream marble with deep soaking tubs positioned to take advantage of those views. The vibe is residential luxury rather than hotel slick, the kind of space where you could actually imagine living rather than just passing through for a few nights. The pool area is one of the property's greatest assets: a sun-drenched expanse of white stone and reflecting water that stretches toward the mountains, lined with private cabanas and surrounded by manicured lawns and palms. Unlike some of the more scene-heavy hotel pools in town, this one maintains a serene, almost private-club atmosphere even when fully booked, which means you can lose entire afternoons here ordering mezze and rosé to your daybed without feeling like you're performing leisure for an audience. The restaurants take Moroccan cuisine seriously without the folkoric presentation that can feel performative at other luxury properties, which means excellent tagines made with produce from the hotel's own gardens alongside refined French dishes and a wine list that goes deeper than you'd expect. Breakfast on the terrace is a particular highlight: proper Moroccan pastries that put standard hotel breakfast pastries to shame, fresh-squeezed juices, eggs any way you want them, all while watching the morning light climb the Atlas peaks. What genuinely sets Selman apart is its location in Agdal, one of Marrakech's most elegant residential neighborhoods. You're removed from the medina chaos without feeling disconnected from the city (it's a ten-minute drive into the souks when you want them), but you return to something that feels more like a private estate than a hotel in a tourist hub. The gardens are vast enough that you can walk for twenty minutes and encounter more horses than people, which is exactly what some travelers want after they've done the medina routine and are ready for something different. The spa offers a proper hammam experience alongside excellent massage therapists and a fitness center that suggests they understand some guests actually want to work out rather than just tick a box. The polo facilities are the real differentiator here: you can book private lessons even if you've never touched a mallet, and watching a match from the clubhouse with a drink in hand is unexpectedly transporting. Service strikes the right note throughout, attentive and knowledgeable without being intrusive, and they're particularly good at arranging off-property experiences that feel genuinely insider rather than standard tour operator offerings. This works for travelers who value space and tranquility as much as architectural drama, who want Marrakech's beauty and sophistication but don't need to be in the historic heart of things, and who appreciate when a hotel has a clear perspective rather than trying to appeal to every possible guest. It's polished but not precious and impressive without being showy.

Ask for an upper level suite in the south wing. You get cleaner light and clearer Atlas views, especially early in the morning when the property is still quiet and the mountains feel close. That terrace is worth being awake for.

What to Pack

What to Pack

Lean into polished but practical. This is a place for linen trousers, flat leather sandals and good sunglasses. Bring something with sleeves for evenings. The sun drops fast and Selman feels most elegant once it cools in the evening.

A Perfect Day

A Perfect Day

Plan the spa late afternoon, then go straight to the bar before dinner. Midday is better spent by the pool or off property. Selman comes into its own at golden hour when the horses are out and the temperature softens.
