THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

IZZA Marrakech

In the heart of the medina, tucked down an unmarked alley where tourists rarely wander, Izza Marrakech is something else entirely. This is a riad in the truest sense, intimate, meticulously restored, the kind of place that feels like a private home you've been invited into rather than a hotel you've booked. The building dates back centuries, and the restoration honored that history without making it untouchable. Original tadlekt plasterwork, hand-painted ceilings, doors carved from cedar that's aged to a color you can't replicate. But the interiors aren't museum pieces, they're layered with contemporary Moroccan design, textiles from Berber villages, lighting that shifts the mood throughout the day. It's traditionalist and modern at once, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. There are only a handful of suites, each one different. Some open onto the central courtyard with its shallow pool and citrus trees, others have private terraces with views over the medina's rooftops. Interiors are studies in texture, zellige tile against rough plaster, vintage rugs on polished concrete, handwoven fabrics in indigo and saffron. Bathrooms are carved from local stone, deep tubs, rain showers, products made from rose and argan oil sourced regionally. The rooftop is where you'll spend your time at this riad. Breakfast up here, fresh mint tea, still-warm msemen, bowls of dates and yogurt, while the city wakes up below. At sunset, it transforms into the best seat in the neighborhood, watching the call to prayer echo across minarets while the sky shifts through shades of amber and violet. There's no formal restaurant, but the kitchen prepares meals that feel like what you'd be served in a Moroccan home if your host happened to be an exceptional cook. Tagines simmered for hours, couscous on Fridays, pastries made that morning. Dinner can happen in the courtyard, on the rooftop, or in your suite. They'll also arrange cooking classes if you want to learn how to make proper harira or understand the spice balance in a good chermoula. The staff are locals who know the medina intimately. They'll guide you to the tanneries before the tour groups arrive, introduce you to the silversmith who works in an unmarked workshop, get you into Dar Moha without a reservation. They're also perfectly content if you want to spend three days reading in the courtyard and not leave the riad at all. The location means you're central, just five minutes to Jemaa el-Fna, close enough to hear the medina's energy but far enough down a quiet derb that you're insulated from it. The neighborhood is residential, so morning sounds of children heading to school and women shopping, but that's the beauty of staying in this historical heart of Marrakech.

What to Know Before You Go

Your morning Café au lait

Your morning Café au lait

Café des Épices gets all the attention, but walk two minutes further to Café Arabe's rooftop. Arrive mornings for a proper café au lait or mid-afternoon when the light hits the rooftops just right.

Rooftop at golden hour

Rooftop at golden hour

The terrace gets perfect light between late afternoon. Order a gin and tonic with local botanicals, settle into the cushions, and watch the swallows dive between minarets. It's the best free entertainment in Marrakech.

What to pack

What to pack

Sun-faded linens, flat sandals smoothed by wear, a leather bag small enough to navigate narrow derbs. Evenings turn cool on the rooftop so bring a cashmere wrap, antique silver bought from the mellah quarter.
