Every serious travel conversation about Marrakech eventually arrives at La Mamounia, which is either a sign of its quality or its gravity, and in this case it is both. The hotel opened in 1923 on land given by Sultan Sidi Mohammed to his son as a wedding gift, set within 200-year-old gardens between the Koutoubia Mosque and the ancient ramparts of the medina. The dining offer is formidable: Moroccan cuisine by chef Rachid Agouray, Italian by Simone Zanoni, Asian by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, pastries by Pierre Hermé, a caviar and champagne bar, a rooftop DJ bar, and a Sunday brunch that Marrakech treats as a social institution. The spa runs to zellige-clad treatment rooms, hammam, pools, and a beauty salon. The gardens, still thick with citrus, olive, and rose, remain the soul of the place. This is a hotel that has survived a century of changing taste by being too particular to be easily dismissed. It suits people who want the full weight of Marrakech's most legendary address, and who find that weight, the history, the grandeur, the 800 staff who know exactly what they are doing, is the point rather than the problem.
