THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Amanjena

On the outskirts of Marrakech, where the city noise fades and the Atlas Mountains come into sharper focus, Amanjena is hidden behind walls the color of desert clay. It's the kind of place that announces itself quietly, no grand entrance, no fanfare, just a sense that you've arrived somewhere removed. The architecture borrows from Moroccan palaces but stripped back. Pavilions arranged around a central basin, arched walkways, courtyards that catch afternoon light in ways that make you reach for your camera then decide against it. The scale feels right, low buildings, gardens that sprawl, space used generously. It feels private even when it's full. The pavilions are spacious, some with their own pools. Interiors lean minimal: zellige tilework, carved wood screens, cream linens against terracotta walls. Bathrooms built from local stone, deep tubs, rainfall showers. There's central heating and air conditioning, which matters more than you'd think, as desert nights get cold and summer days are relentless. Two pools, both worth using. The main one is thirty meters, lined with columns, good for lap swimming. The smaller one is tucked into the gardens, quieter. The spa offers hammam treatments done properly, not the abbreviated hotel version but the full ritual with black soap, gommage, the works. Book the traditional Moroccan massage if you're staying more than two nights. The restaurant serves Moroccan and Mediterranean, which sounds expected but isn't. Tagines made with produce from local souks, grilled fish from Essaouira, wine from French vineyards they've chosen carefully. Breakfast on your terrace is a real treat, mint tea, fresh orange juice, msemen still warm. Dinner by the pool in summer, fireside in winter. The staff knows Marrakech thoroughly. They'll arrange guides for the medina who actually know the history, drivers who won't take you to their cousin's carpet shop, reservations at restaurants that don't advertise. They're also fine if you want to do nothing, the hotel is built for that too.

Make sure to book the traditional black soap treatment and let them take their time with eucalyptus steam, olive-based savon noir, then the mitt exfoliation that removes skin you didn't know was there. It's intense in the best way.

Loose linens in neutral tones, Manolo mules for dinner, a light cotton scarf for the souks. Something for evenings when the temperature drops, a cashmere wrap, a linen blazer. The vibe is effortlessly elegant, not trying too hard.
