Sköldungagatan 2 was built in 1910 as a private house in Lärkstaden, a quiet residential pocket of Stockholm close to the city centre, and it still reads like one: interior designer Ilse Crawford was brought in to keep the rooms feeling inhabited rather than furnished, and owner Jeanette Mix has held to that since day one. There are only twelve rooms, each individually decorated, with minibars, LCD televisions and down bedding rather than anything mass-produced, and a courtyard garden at the back that the house calls its secret wilderness. The kitchen matters here as much as the rooms: chefs work from local, seasonal produce, guests and outside visitors alike can book a table, and the house will arrange dinners or a whole-floor takeover for a private event. Downstairs there is a yoga shala running daily classes, a sauna, and a concierge who can also book a massage, a facial or a hammam session. A library, bike rental, and a doctor on call round out a list built for people who stay rather than pass through, and pets are welcome, with English spoken throughout and check-in from three in the afternoon. None of this suits anyone after the scale of a large hotel lobby or the anonymity of hundreds of rooms; with twelve rooms there is no crowd to disappear into, and the nightlife of central Stockholm sits two kilometres away rather than downstairs. What Ett Hem has that its competitors in this city do not is a plain sense of being someone's actual former home, not a design concept borrowed from one. A 1910 townhouse in Lärkstaden with just twelve rooms, Ett Hem still runs like the private home it once was, kitchen open to non-guests included. It suits travelers who want scale kept small, not anyone chasing a big lobby or nightlife next door.
