THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Stockholm Stadshotell
Stockholm Stadshotell occupies a sandstone-coloured building on Björngårdsgatan that Queen Dowager Josefina commissioned in memory of her husband King Oscar I, completed in 1875, and one floor up from the entry-level Bistro, the hotel's former chapel now serves as Matsalen, a dining room that hosts rotating collaborations and guest residencies, a detail few Stockholm hotels can match. The building holds the highest heritage classification from the City of Stockholm Museum and was carefully restored in 2025, so the palatial character survives alongside working amenities: a spa, a sauna with cold plunge, and 24-hour reception across 32 rooms, each one different. Rooms are dressed in DUX beds with Italian linen, birch burl headboards and Swedish pine floors, with bathrooms finished in Perlino marble or Kinnekulle limestone and bath products developed with Stockholm's own perfume house, Stora Skuggan. Downstairs, the Bistro runs on a charcoal grill from breakfast through midnight, and in summer the courtyard opens for meals and drinks under the parasols. The hotel sits a kilometre from central Stockholm, close enough to walk to Mariatorget, Riddarholmen Church and the Nobel Museum, but far enough that it reads as neighbourhood rather than tourist strip, which suits travellers who want their base quiet and their food serious more than those chasing a downtown balcony view. Pets are allowed and the building is wheelchair accessible, though families needing an extra bed should note the 1,000 SEK nightly fee, and anyone driving in should budget 2,500 SEK a day for valet parking, plus a 1,000 SEK damage deposit collected per day at check-in. What lingers after checkout is the chapel turned dining room, a detail that no brochure adjective could invent. Stockholm Stadshotell occupies an 1875 heritage building whose former chapel now serves as a dining room with rotating guest residencies. Its 32 rooms mix DUX beds and marble bathrooms, a kilometre from central Stockholm near Mariatorget. Pets are welcome, though extra beds and the damage deposit carry separate fees.
