THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Pig At Combe
This honey-stone Elizabethan manor tucked into Devon's Otter Valley has perfected the art of making grandeur feel completely unpretentious. The staff wears Converse with their uniforms, there's a wood-fired pizza oven in the old orangery, and instead of minibars, rooms come with mini larders stocked with Otter Bitter from the local brewery and homemade treats from the kitchen gardens. You can wander through Victorian greenhouses picking herbs for your afternoon G&T, then sink into a roll-top bath overlooking 3,500 acres of countryside. The rooms are cleverly mismatched in that way that feels curated rather than chaotic. Four-poster beds with crisp linens, metro-tiled walk-in showers, and deep velvet armchairs positioned exactly where you'd want to read. Main house rooms have vast mullioned windows framing the Devonshire hills, while stable yard suites offer more privacy without sacrificing charm. Everything's stocked with Bramley bath products that smell like actual botanicals, and there's always a Nespresso machine for mornings. The 25 mile menu philosophy is serious business here, not performative farm to table but actual collaboration between garden team and kitchen. Menus change based on what's ready that morning. Lyme Bay is eight miles away, so seafood arrives practically still tasting of salt. Book one of the Stream Wagons for privacy; they're converted shepherd's huts along the River Gitt with repurposed wood interiors, wood-burning stoves, and outdoor baths. Otherwise you'll spend your time in The Folly or on the lawn swing, glass of English sparkling in hand.

Extra info
The Pig takes its food and drink offering seriously and even the minibars aren’t safe: instead, they’re mini larders, stocked with all the homemade and local treats they could squeeze in, including some English sparkling wine, Otter Bitter beer from the brewery down the road, Devonshire fudge and Willie’s Cacao.
There are two ground-floor Comfy Rooms that are suitable for wheelchair users and much of the communal areas are navigable for wheelchairs as well. A two night minimum stay is required at weekends.
