THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Chetzeron

Crans-Montana sits on a broad south-facing plateau in the Swiss canton of Valais at around 1,500 metres, looking across the Rhône Valley toward the Italian Alps. It is one of the classic Swiss resort towns, with the reliable sunshine that the plateau orientation provides and access to a ski area that runs up to the Plaine Morte glacier at nearly 3,000 metres. The panorama on a clear day is among the more extraordinary in the Alps: the full chain from the Matterhorn in the east to Mont Blanc in the west, visible from a single vantage point in a way that is genuinely rare. The resort has been drawing wealthy Europeans since the late 19th century, and its combination of serious skiing, a renowned golf course hosting the European Masters, and the particular unhurried quality of Valais village life gives it a different character to the more frenetic French resorts. At 2,112 metres, on the ski slopes above the resort, sits a building that was for decades the mid-station gondola lift of the Cry d'Er cable car. In 2009 it was converted into a restaurant. In 2014 it became a hotel. The conversion, which left the raw concrete structure of the original station entirely visible and combined it with local stone, Valais oak and floor-to-ceiling glass, is one of the more considered examples of adaptive reuse in Alpine hospitality: a building that neither pretends to be a traditional chalet nor ignores the industrial character of what it was, and that sits in the landscape with an unapologetic modernism that somehow makes complete sense at 2,112 metres with that view in front of it. There are 16 rooms, all with mountain views, heated floors, large windows, and reading nooks, designed with the same restraint as the building itself. The solar panels and photovoltaic cladding heat the water and generate the electricity. Ingredients for the restaurant come exclusively from the Valais. Getting there is part of the experience. In winter, you take the gondola to Cry d'Er and ski three minutes or walk twenty to the hotel. The mountain road is closed to public traffic. In summer, the hotel's 4x4 collects you. In the evening, for non-staying guests, a snowcat makes the descent from Crans-Montana. Ski-in, ski-out is not a marketing phrase here: it is a literal description of the only practical way in and out of the property for most of the winter season. The restaurant uses Valais produce and serves Alpine cooking that takes the regional larder seriously. The outdoor heated pool sits at altitude facing the peaks. The sauna and hammam handle the après-ski. The bar has a fireplace. The guests are those for whom the location is the point, design-literate skiers and hikers who find a converted gondola station above the treeline more interesting than any hotel in the village below, and who will spend the morning on the glacier and the evening with Valais wine by the fire watching the valley lights come on beneath them. It is genuinely one of a kind. The short version: A former mid-station gondola lift at 2,112 metres above Crans-Montana, converted into a 16-room boutique hotel in 2014. Local stone, Valais oak and raw concrete throughout, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc panorama, ski-in ski-out, a restaurant using exclusively Valais produce, an outdoor heated pool at altitude, and a sauna. The mountain road is closed to public traffic. Access in winter by gondola then skis or on foot. A genuinely irreplaceable address.

What to Know Before You Go

The raclette terrace doesn't close with ski season

The raclette terrace doesn't close with ski season

Book the raclette evenings year-round, not just in winter. Most guests assume it's seasonal, but Chetzeron runs them through summer on the panoramic terrace. Local Valais cheese at 2,112 meters without the ski crowds is a great experience.

A head start

A head start

Staying at 2,112 meters on the slopes means you're already there when the groomers finish. The gondola from Crans-Montana takes 20 minutes, you've done your first run before the crowds arrive.

What to pack

What to pack

One good puffer and layers that work for alpine minimalism. The concrete-and-glass aesthetic isn't traditional chalet territory, more Jil Sander or The Row. You're carrying your bags in (snowcat, gondola, or on foot) so pack light and intentional.
