THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Palace Luzern
Hotel Palace Luzern has looked out over Lake Lucerne since 1906, a Belle Époque building whose rooms still face the water and the Alps beyond it, now run under the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. A doorman meets guests at the entrance, check-in runs from 3pm and checkout from noon, and the 136 rooms are spread across six floors, each individually decorated rather than stamped from a template, with a minibar, safe and proper toiletries as standard. What separates it from other lakefront addresses in Lucerne is the spread of four distinct restaurants on site, Colonnade, Minamo, MOzern and Quai 10, alongside a coffee shop and bar, so a stay of several nights does not mean repeating a menu. The spa keeps a sauna, steam room and massage treatments, and the fitness centre runs around the clock for early risers and jet-lagged arrivals alike. For business, there is a grand ballroom and four meeting rooms totalling close to 4,725 square feet, backed by a 24-hour business centre. The location holds up on foot: Lowenplatz, the Bourbaki Panorama and the Glacier Garden are all close by, as are the Lake Side Promenade and Grand Casino Lucerne. This suits couples marking an occasion, delegates who need a credible address for client meetings, and travellers who bring a dog, since pets stay for a fee. It does not suit anyone hoping to leave a teenager here alone, since under-18s cannot stay unaccompanied, or anyone counting Swiss francs closely, given the 300 CHF daily deposit and the extra-bed charge. What stays with a guest afterward is the water outside the window, doing exactly what it has done since 1906. A Belle Époque hotel on Lake Lucerne since 1906, now under Mandarin Oriental, with four restaurants, a spa and 136 individually decorated rooms facing the water and the Alps. It suits couples, business travellers and dog owners, not anyone leaving a teenager unsupervised or watching every franc.
