THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Maison Brummell Majorelle
The pool at Maison Brummell sits under a wall of cactus and Bignone spilling over from the Jardin Majorelle next door, close enough that guests are effectively borrowing one of Marrakesh's most photographed gardens as scenery. The house was built from scratch by architect Bergendy Cooke with Moroccan architect Amine Abouraoui for Austrian hotelier Christian Schallert, and it shows: terrazzo floors meet traditional tadelakt walls, door handles are Gio Ponti's Lama design, and the wood-and-brass furniture came from local maker Maison Nicole. With only eight rooms across two categories, plus a private annex apartment, this is closer to a private house than a hotel, which suits travellers who want quiet and design over lobby bustle and stressful breakfast buffets, and works less well for anyone who wants the medina's noise and energy right outside the door. A marble hammam does the heavy lifting instead: massage room, heated plunge pool with jets, steam bath and the traditional stone block for gommage. The Garden Deluxe room has its own outdoor bathtub and private garden; the Majorelle Superior leans smaller and cosier, with a private balcony and access to that hammam. The address sits on the quiet parallel street to Rue Yves Saint Laurent, among residential villas, a ten-minute taxi from Jemaa el Fna, and walking distance from the Ensemble Artisanal and Theatre Royal. Two practicalities worth knowing before booking: unmarried couples need to bring a marriage certificate or book two rooms, and the house is not set up for guests with limited mobility. Meal service can also thin out during Ramadan. None of that dulls what the place offers, a small, deliberate house next to a garden everyone else only visits. Eight rooms, a marble hammam, and a pool wall shared with the Majorelle Gardens next door: Maison Brummell is built for people who want boutique intimacy over big-hotel amenities. Design lovers and quiet-neighborhood travellers fit; groups chasing medina buzz or step-free access should look elsewhere.
