THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Witt Hotel
Witt Istanbul occupies a corner block in Cihangir that once housed the local Ogilvy & Mather office, reshaped in 2008 into eighteen rooms fitted out by Autoban, with bathroom and minibar hardware from Ross Lovegrove, more like a well-kept apartment than a hotel floor. Founder Tuncel Toprak chose the site deliberately, staying clear of Taksim Square and Sultanahmet so guests land in a bohemian, artist-heavy pocket of Beyoğlu instead of the tourist track. Breakfast reflects that intent: home-cooked, largely organic, jams handmade and honey brought in from Bodrum, served in the lobby from 7:30 to 11am or delivered to the room free of charge, since there is no restaurant on site and the front desk would rather send you to one of the kitchens minutes away. What the hotel has that its boutique neighbors mostly don't is staffing at a one-to-one, employee-to-room ratio, so a taxi gets called, a theater reservation made, a massage booked or bags packed without a second request. Rooms carry minibars, bathrobes and slippers, and a few include a marble kitchen island for anyone who'd rather assemble a market haul than order in. Public space stays limited on purpose: a library corner, a lobby bar, an iMac for checking email. That suits a traveler who wants Istanbul close enough to walk to and a concierge who already knows the neighborhood, not someone chasing extensive on-site facilities or the certainty of a big chain. The tram to Sultanahmet leaves from around the corner, and the rest of the city is left for you to find on your own terms. An eighteen-room Cihangir boutique built into a former ad agency office, designed by Autoban with Ross Lovegrove bathroom fixtures, and run at a one-to-one staff-to-room ratio. Home-cooked breakfast, no on-site restaurant, walking distance to Galata Tower and Taksim Square. Suits someone after quiet and personal service over big-hotel facilities.
