On Çukur Cuma Caddesi in Beyoğlu, a shuttered building spent 2012 to 2014 being restored rather than reinvented before reopening as Hammamhane. Original architectural details were kept wherever possible, and the structure was reinforced with a steel frame added quietly underneath, without erasing what came before. There is no lobby built for posing and no restaurant table waiting to be filled; instead there are 14 rooms spread across four floors, several with working kitchens, dishwashers, fridges and kettles rather than a shelf with a kettle on it, plus terraces or balconies instead of a strip of window. The Loft Double Room opens onto its own terrace, the Terrace Suite pairs a sofa with outdoor space, and the annex holds a one-bedroom queen apartment with its own balcony. The historic Çukurcuma Hamamı sits next door on the same street, and the hotel runs its own traditional Turkish hammam rituals, from a scrub-and-foam session to a two-hour treatment called The Sultana, booked in advance through the property. Staff speak English, German, Italian, Russian and Turkish, the building is certified under the Turkey Sustainable Tourism Program, and rooms are soundproofed against a neighbourhood that the city's usual energy has never quite reached. None of this suits someone chasing a rooftop pool or an elaborate breakfast buffet; the hotel sits three kilometres from the centre, closer to Istiklal Avenue than to any sightseeing checklist, and airport transfers cost extra. It suits someone who wants to cook eggs in her own kitchen at 7am and be scrubbed raw by 7pm. Few hotels this size manage both.
