THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Ecole St Pierre Hotel
Ecole St Pierre Hotel sits inside a converted nineteenth-century French school on Galata Kulesi Sokak, and the detail that sets it apart is what remains standing within it: a stretch of Genoese city wall built in the thirteenth century, still in place and now enclosed by the courtyard restaurant, Il Cortile. Guests eat pizza a few feet from that same stonework, inside a building where Christian, Jewish and Muslim pupils once studied side by side under Italian Dominican administration before the school closed in 1935. Its architect, Gaspare Fossati, later restored Hagia Sophia, an unusual pedigree for a hotel this size. The location does the rest: Galata Tower, Şişhane and Galata Bridge are all within walking distance, so the neighbourhood works as an extension of the hotel rather than a reason to leave it. With just seventeen rooms, the operation stays small enough that the 24-hour reception and concierge recognise guests rather than room numbers, and a garden with outdoor furniture offers a quiet corner away from the restaurant's clatter. Pets are welcome, Wi-Fi is free throughout, and a shuttle can be arranged for arrivals who would rather not navigate Beyoğlu's slopes with luggage. None of this suits anyone chasing rooftop pools or brand consistency; the building's age means character over uniformity, and travellers who want predictable modern design should look elsewhere. For those who would rather sleep inside a piece of Galata's layered history than read about it on a plaque, this is one of the few places in the city where that is actually possible. A restored nineteenth-century French school in Galata where a 13th-century Genoese wall runs straight through the courtyard restaurant. Seventeen rooms, a garden, and Galata Tower a short walk away. Not for anyone wanting sleek uniformity, but rare for anyone wanting to sleep inside real history.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Before becoming a hotel, the building housed the Collège des Frères St. Pierre, where Christian, Jewish and Muslim students studied together in French, with Ottoman Turkish as a secondary language. The school operated from 1842 until financial pressures during and after World War I led to its closure in 1935, leaving behind a genuinely multicultural legacy.
