THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel The Public
At the center of Hotel The Public, a courtyard grows under a glass roof that opens to the sky, live plants filling a space guests use for reading or a slow coffee rather than photographs. The building around it dates to 1898, a first-degree historical monument on a side street off Istiklal Avenue in Beyoglu that once housed the Serbian Consulate before its restoration into a 52-room hotel across six floors. The restoration kept the original solid wood parquet floors and left nostalgic radiators in place alongside the modern ventilation system. Rooms carry the high ceilings of that original structure but furnish them with retro pieces: 1950s SMEG mini fridges, Bugatti kettles, Nespresso machines, Philippe Starck bathroom fittings, L'Occitane toiletries. That combination, a protected nineteenth-century shell fitted out with mid-century design objects, is not something the newer hotels lining Istiklal Avenue can offer. Taksim Square is 550 meters away, and Cihangir's cafes, Pera Museum and Galata Tower sit within a kilometer on foot. A bar, restaurant, library and business center cover most needs on site, and staff speak English and Russian. This suits someone who wants an address with a documented past and doesn't mind a courtyard instead of a pool; anyone set on resort-scale facilities or a spa should look further along the Bosphorus. Families booking extra beds should note the 30 EUR nightly fee, and pets cannot come along. The hotel also holds Türkiye's Sustainable Tourism Program certification, a credential fewer buildings this old in Beyoglu can claim. It has stood since 1898, restored since, still asking to be noticed room by room rather than at a glance. Built in 1898 as the Serbian Consulate, Hotel The Public pairs original parquet floors and a glass-roofed courtyard with 1950s SMEG and Philippe Starck fixtures across 52 rooms in Beyoglu, 550 meters from Taksim Square. It suits history-minded travelers, not those chasing a pool or spa.
