THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Cronton Design Hotel
Cronton Design Hotel occupies the Vakıfhan, a 1911 building by architect Kemaleddin that opens onto four street frontages in Sirkeci, a corner of Istanbul's historic peninsula few hotels can claim. From the door, Spice Bazaar, Galata Bridge and Grand Bazaar are all within a kilometre, close enough to walk without a map. Inside, Sirkeci Lokantası 1912 keeps the address's dining history alive, having served the neighbourhood for over a century, while the roof terrace opens the skyline over the peninsula for dinner or a glass from the wine cellar. Downstairs, Hygiea Spa runs a Turkish hamam, sauna and massage rooms, though sessions need booking ahead of arrival. The 39 rooms range from a 215-square-foot Deluxe Balcony room to a 517-square-foot Executive Double Suite, each with a private bathroom, and the larger Premium categories add soundproofing and high-speed internet for anyone working between meetings. Reception runs around the clock, staff speak English and Russian, and a shuttle and tour desk handle the practicalities of a first visit. This suits travellers drawn to Istanbul's old city and willing to book spa time ahead rather than walk in; anyone travelling with a pet should look elsewhere, since animals aren't permitted. Breakfast isn't automatic here, it depends on the rate booked, and the local-cuisine breakfast carries its own charge if ordered separately. What stays with you afterward isn't the design or the towels folded just so. It's standing on the roof terrace at dusk, looking over rooftops this building has watched for more than a century, still standing exactly where it began. Cronton occupies a century-old Vakıfhan building in Sirkeci, four facades deep in Istanbul's historic peninsula, a kilometre from the Spice Bazaar. Its 39 rooms sit above a hamam, spa and a restaurant serving since 1912. Pets aren't allowed, and spa sessions need booking ahead.
