THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Hôtel Le Yaca Saint-Tropez

The building that houses Le Yaca has been standing at the foot of the Citadel in old Saint-Tropez since 1722, and the small white door on Boulevard d'Aumale, easy to miss, easy to walk past, is precisely the point of it. An 18th-century stone residence in the warren of alleys behind the port and a short walk from La Ponche beach, it opened as a hotel after the Second World War when Philippe Tallien, a former dancer with the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, bought the property and christened it L'Aïoli, quickly attracting Greta Garbo, Jean Cocteau, Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth, and Prince Ali Khan to what was then one of the more discreet addresses on the Côte d'Azur. In 1980 the Huret family took over, and under Laurence and François Huret the hotel has been carefully tended ever since, renovated most recently by designer Monica Damonte in 2017 and with a new junior suite added in 2022. The hotel now runs to 30 rooms, two duplex suites, and one junior suite. The interiors carry a considered orientalist inflection, not overdone, accumulated over decades by the Hurets, who have collected rugs, lamps, bronze sculptures by Nathalie Decoster, low tables by Ado Chale, and furniture by Gio Ponti, the whole thing read as a private house rather than a designed hotel object. Rooms are dressed in Rubelli fabrics and Frette linens, with black-and-white marble bathrooms and, in several rooms, canopy beds; corridors carry Baxter appliques and Jakobsson chandeliers. The bar, with its dark wood and marble-and-brass tables, opens at eight in the morning. The heart of the property is the patio, a Mediterranean garden with pool, parasols in cobalt blue, and Le Patio restaurant, where chef Mirko Guastadisegni, working alongside Michelin-starred Andrea Sarri of Ristorante Sarri in Imperia, runs a serious Italian kitchen, with spaghetti di Gragnano, clams, bottarga, and beef tagliata sourced from Olivier Metzger among the things people come back for. Breakfast is buffet-style or brought to the room, and a free shuttle runs to the Pampelonne beaches from June to September. This is a hotel for people who want Saint-Tropez but do not want to be seen wanting it, which is a different thing from the Riviera palace experience down at the water's edge and a different thing still from the beachside clubs that define how most people understand this town in July and August. Le Yaca draws a quietly loyal repeat clientele, the kind of guest who knows Mohammed at the concierge desk by name and books the same room each season. The art on the walls changes, the pool is never enormous, the corridors are dimly lit in a way that some people love and others find oppressive, and the whole register is intimate to the point of feeling like an address that belongs to someone rather than a hotel brand. You should not come if you are expecting a Riviera spectacle, a buzzing rooftop, or a property scaled for social documentation. The pool is small, the beach is a shuttle ride away, and the tone is more old-money private residence than it is polished five-star resort. You should come if you find Saint-Tropez's public theatre exhausting, and want to be in the middle of the old village without being part of it, if you want dinner that is genuinely about the food rather than the occasion, and if the idea of a hotel with a seventy-year-old regulars list reads as a recommendation rather than a warning. The short version: An 18th-century residence in the alleys of old Saint-Tropez, open as a hotel since the 1940s and owned by the Huret family since 1980, with 33 rooms and suites, a serious Italian restaurant, and a long history of attracting people who prefer not to be seen.

The unmarked door

The unmarked door

The entrance on Boulevard d'Aumale is easy to miss; look for the tall palm tree beside the white door rather than a sign.

Eat at the Patio early

Eat at the Patio early

The garden restaurant fills quietly; book for the first sitting to get the best table beside the pool before the parasols are all claimed.

What to pack

What to pack

A linen shirt or something light enough for dinner at a poolside table in thirty-degree heat, and flat shoes: the cobblestones between the port and the hotel are uneven in the dark.
