THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Awasi Iguazu
Fourteen private villas sit inside Atlantic Rainforest four kilometres outside Puerto Iguazú, each one on a single floor with no elevators, and each assigned its own private guide and 4x4 vehicle from check-in. Awasi is a member of Relais & Châteaux, but the real point of difference is that guide: no group bus schedule to work around, no fixed itinerary, just a route built around what a particular guest wants to see and when. That might mean the Devil's Throat, surrounded by mist and the roar of falling water, a boat up the Alto Paraná to the secluded Yasy Fall, the quieter Macuco trail toward Salto Arrechea, a morning with the wildlife rescue team at Güirá Oga, or time with the Mbya Guaraní community learning the plants and crafts of the forest. Guests can also join the lodge's own conservation efforts, protecting the same rainforest the villas sit inside. Back at the property, days settle into a restaurant built around yerba mate, citrus and freshwater fish, a bar, a pool, a spa, and a garden terrace facing the trees. The jungle setting that makes all this possible also means the hotel isn't wheelchair accessible, and there's no elevator for anyone who needs one. Wi-Fi and parking are free, breakfast is included, pets are not. This suits someone who wants Iguazú explained by a person who knows it, not narrated over a microphone, and who doesn't mind paying for that kind of privacy. It won't suit anyone hoping to walk into town, or anyone after the falls without the forest wrapped around the stay. Fourteen villas, one guide each, one rainforest: that's the whole proposition.
