THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Kaipuu Belfry
Kaipuu Belfry occupies the old Quanzhou Bell Tower Department Store, a 1979 shopping hall at the crossing of East and West Street, and its rooftop garden still looks out at the twin pagodas of Kaiyuan Temple with the bell tower standing next door. That fact sets it apart from other hotels in the city: this is a department store turned into 43 rooms, with the original butterfly staircase kept intact and designer Xie Ke's honey-toned wood floors and soft white walls layered over the historic shell. The hám-khàk restaurant draws its menu concept from a Minnan folk custom of shell-casting divination, pairing local seafood with seasonal produce, while the rooftop garden bar pours drinks over a view of the street life below. Guests who want a hotel that reads the city rather than repeats it will find their footing here, with East and West Street, Kaiyuan Temple, and the lanes around Zhongshan Road a short walk away, and puppet-show performers brought in for festivals rather than piped-in entertainment. Families are planned for rather than tolerated, with loft rooms that sleep up to four and a highchair on request, though this stays a compact city hotel of three floors and one restaurant rather than a resort with sprawling grounds. The property carries GSTC sustainability certification, using natural resin tableware and daylight-led room design to reduce energy use, and belongs to SLH's Considerate Collection. It is built for travellers who want to wake up inside the city's memory rather than beside it. A converted 1979 department store at Quanzhou's East-West Street crossing, with a rooftop garden facing Kaiyuan Temple's twin pagodas and a restaurant named for a local shell-divination custom. Forty-three rooms, three floors, GSTC-certified, built for travellers who want the old city outside the window, not sprawling grounds.

Kaipuu Belfry occupies the former Quanzhou Bell Tower Department Store, opened in 1979 and once the city's favourite shopping destination. Designer Xie Ke's renovation preserved original features, including the building's butterfly staircase, while weaving in Minnan design elements, turning a beloved local landmark into a boutique hotel beside the historic Bell Tower.
