THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
J Hotel Shanghai Tower
On the 86th floor, long before the elevator doors open onto reception, the city has already fallen away below the window glass. J Hotel Shanghai Tower occupies the upper spiral of the 632-meter Shanghai Tower in Lujiazui, and its 165 rooms, including 34 suites, run from Floor 86 to Floor 98, making them among the highest and most spacious guest accommodations in Shanghai, with sizes stretching from 61 to 380 square meters. That height is the one thing rivals along the Bund or in Puxi simply cannot replicate: a room here looks down on the Oriental Pearl Tower and traces the Huangpu River out toward the East China Sea, with Jin Mao Tower close enough to feel like a neighbor. Rooms come in two registers, New Chinese, with embossed wallpaper and leather-trimmed cabinetry nodding to Yangtze Delta craftsmanship, or Contemporary, built around crystal magnolia details and calfskin paneling. Downstairs, the practicalities are handled properly: 24-hour front desk, concierge, an outdoor pool, spa, gym, restaurants and a bar, plus wheelchair access and EV charging for anyone who drove in. This suits travelers chasing altitude and a skyline story worth telling, not those wanting to be at street level among the Bund's foot traffic, and it is not the place for anyone put off by a 3,000 CNY daily damage deposit at check-in. China's mandated coordinate-shifting also means the map pin won't be exact, so confirm the address before arranging a pickup. What lingers afterward is simple: few hotels anywhere let you watch a city breathe from this far up. Perched from the 86th to 98th floor of the Shanghai Tower, this 165-room hotel trades street-level convenience for genuinely unmatched skyline views over the Bund and Huangpu River. Expect a 3,000 CNY daily deposit and a slightly shifted map pin, both part of the altitude's price.
