THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik
Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik began as a private villa in 1913, and its west-facing terraces still look straight across the Adriatic to the fortress walls of the Old Town, a five-minute walk away. Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Taylor once stayed here, and the 158-room hotel today has gardens to walk through and a private beach of its own. Three restaurants share that same view of the sea and the city walls, and the spa opens directly onto the beach. There is an indoor pool as well as an outdoor one, a sauna, a steam room and a gym, plus a business center and conference hall for guests here to work rather than only lounge. Rooms range from Classic doubles at around 226 square feet to Executive suites past 600, most with air conditioning, minibar, safe and a balcony where the sea view warrants one; size and bedding shift a lot by category, so it is worth checking before booking. This suits a couple who wants the Old Town within walking distance without sleeping inside its walls, and who is willing to pay for both the location and the pedigree of a hotel that has hosted royalty and Hollywood stars. It will not suit anyone traveling with a pet, since none are allowed, or anyone chasing anonymity, since the history here is very much part of the sell. Check-in runs from 2pm, check-out is noon, and an extra bed costs 100 euros a night. Built as a private villa in 1913 and once host to Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Taylor, Hotel Excelsior sits a five-minute walk from the Old Town walls with its own private beach and spa access. Three restaurants and 158 rooms look out over the Adriatic. Pets are not permitted.

The hotel houses three separate restaurants, each positioned to take in spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea and the ancient walled city across the water. Dining here pairs the property's elegant setting with sightlines toward Dubrovnik's fortress skyline, a rare vantage point for a hotel this close to the Old Town.
