THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Die Sonne Frankenberg
Three sixteenth-century buildings stand on Frankenberg's market square, beside a ten-towered town hall carved with figures by the sculptor Philipp Soldan, and a modern hotel now runs quietly under their steep roofs. Hotel Die Sonne Frankenberg has welcomed travelers since 1833, but the rooms only appeared in 2007, once a full renovation folded the old brewhouse, the Bürgerhaus and the Stadtweinhaus into 63 rooms across four floors. Breakfast is served on site, and dinner splits between the traditional Sonne Stuben and the gourmet Philipp Soldan restaurant, which earned the hotel a MICHELIN Key in October 2024, a distinction few small-town hotels in Hesse can claim. After a day hiking the Burgwaldpfad or visiting the Hercules monument, the spa offers a sauna, steam room, solarium and massage, and a fitness room waits for anyone who prefers to move rather than soak. Room types run from the Classic Double to the Junior Suite and Standard Suite, each with air conditioning, a minibar, bathrobe and slippers, and several suites add soundproofing, handy given the weekly market that still sets up on the square below. Wi-Fi and parking are free, English is spoken alongside German, and dogs travel for fifteen euros a stay, though no one under eighteen can check in alone. This suits someone who wants a working medieval town center and a kitchen worth crossing Hesse for, not someone chasing a beach or a lobby built for photographs, since neither exists here. The carved figures on the town hall across the square have watched guests arrive since the sixteenth century; they are not easily impressed, and neither, it turns out, is this hotel. A converted sixteenth-century brewhouse and two neighboring townhouses on Frankenberg's market square, 63 rooms, a MICHELIN Key restaurant, and a spa for after the hiking trails. Good for a real Hessian old town and a kitchen worth the detour, not for anyone wanting a beach or a see-and-be-seen lobby.
