THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Das Hochgrat
Oberstaufen sits in Germany's Allgäu, and Das Hochgrat is built around the reasons people come here: a golf course out the back, a sauna for after the slopes, ski passes available in winter, and a terrace that catches the mountain light in summer. This is an aparthotel of chalets rather than a row of standard rooms, and the room list confirms it: Chalet Deluxe, Superior, King Size Bed and Grand, each holding up to ten adults and six children, which points squarely at multigenerational families and golfing groups who want the run of one large space rather than two adjoining doubles. It will feel oversized to a couple hunting a compact, quiet room for two. Design-hotel detailing runs through the interiors rather than alpine kitsch, with microwaves, flat-screen televisions, cable and private balconies or patios in each of the 19 individually decorated rooms; bathrooms carry proper toiletries and hair dryers. Some chalets come with their own sauna in addition to the shared one, a detail this golf hotel offers that its Oberstaufen neighbours mostly do not. Families travelling with children get a detective trail and an adventure playground on site, and dogs are welcome, which rules out the property for anyone allergic to either. A restaurant and bar cover meals without leaving the grounds, breakfast runs 8 to 10 a.m. for a fee, and Wi-Fi, laundry and a lift are standard. Heimatmuseum Oberstaufen is a short walk away, Aquaria Erlebnisbad barely further, and Grosser Alpsee is fifteen minutes by car. Free self-parking removes the usual scramble for a space in a mountain village built long before cars were. Oberstaufen's golf-and-chalet address comes with saunas built into some units and room sizes running to sixteen guests, better suited to families and golfing groups than a couple wanting a quiet double. Breakfast, restaurant, bar and free parking are all on site; Grosser Alpsee is fifteen minutes away.
