THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden
Restaurant Johann Grill serves its breakfast buffet against a wall-to-wall view of the Bavarian Alps, then switches to à la carte for dinner, which is reason enough to linger over a second coffee. Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden sits in the Obersalzberg area, three kilometres from town, with the wartime bunkers of Hotel Zum Türken within walking distance for anyone curious about the site's layered history. What sets it apart from other Alpine hotels of its kind is Gourmet Restaurant PUR, holding two MICHELIN stars for a second year running under chef Ulrich Heimann, who sources nearly all his meat, milk and fish locally and changes the menu with the season; reservations run Wednesday to Saturday and the dress code is smart casual. The 138 rooms across three floors keep things intimate rather than sprawling, and Kempinski The Spa adds an indoor pool, a heated outdoor pool, three saunas and a waterbed lounge for the hours between meals. Skiers get ski-in/ski-out access, a ski school, storage and a shuttle, so the slopes are not a production. Families will find a kids club, a playroom and a children's pool, though the Gourmet Restaurant only seats guests aged twelve and up, and dogs under five kilos are welcome for a surcharge. Business groups can fill the Paulus van Vianen suite for 200 or take a smaller room like Clara Schumann for a tighter agenda. This is not a place for anyone chasing anonymity in a big-brand tower; it rewards people willing to plan a dinner around a tasting menu and a morning around a mountain.\n\nA 138-room Alpine hotel in Obersalzberg where Gourmet Restaurant PUR holds two MICHELIN stars under chef Ulrich Heimann. Ski-in/ski-out access, a full spa with three saunas, and a kids club sit alongside meeting rooms for 200. Better suited to slow mornings and tasting menus than fast weekend passes.

On select autumn dates, guests ride the Jennerbahn cable car to a champagne reception before Michelin-starred chef Ulrich Heimann serves an exclusive fine-dining menu at the Jenneralm, 1,800 metres up, framed by views of the Watzmann massif. It turns a mountain excursion into a genuine culinary event.
The spa offers sauna, steam room and massage treatments.
Ski storage, ski rental and a ski shuttle are offered on site.
Airport transfer can be arranged for guests.
Babysitting and a children's playroom are available.
A concierge and 24-hour reception assist guests at any time.
