THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Das Rubezahl
Coffee at the window overlooking Horn's town center is the opening move at Das Rübezahl, and the closing one might be a Kneipp foot bath after a day on skis. This 54-room resort, spread across four floors in Germany, sits close enough to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles that the hotel arranges tickets on request, and near enough to hiking trails and a skiing area that ski passes and a ski shuttle are standard rather than an afterthought. The spa runs to a sauna, steam room, tepidarium and Kneipp baths alongside massage and beauty treatments, a combination that pulls double duty for hikers icing sore legs and skiers thawing out, which is not something every alpine-adjacent property manages to offer in one building. Rooms lean traditional, wooden décor, cable TV, some with a private balcony, and the restaurant shifts registers through the day, light regional plates for lunch, gourmet cooking once evening sets in. A library, mini golf, an outdoor heated pool, fishing and bicycle rental fill the hours between spa sessions and slope time, and a bridal suite with an indoor fireplace suggests the hotel has hosted its share of small weddings. Pets are welcome for a fee, English, German, Spanish and Portuguese cover the front desk, and check-in stops at 10pm, so this rewards planners over late arrivals. It suits couples chasing both castles and Kneipp cures, families who ski, and anyone who wants a spa day bookended by a proper walk outdoors. It will read wrong for guests wanting a party pulse or a compact city base. What lingers is the Kneipp bath after cold air, a small ritual most hotels near these castles don't bother with. Das Rübezahl pairs castle views near Neuschwanstein with a spa built around Kneipp baths, skiing on one side and hiking trails on the other. It suits couples and active families more than city-break seekers. Check-in closes at 10pm, so plan ahead.

Set in Schwangau at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, Das Rübezahl overlooks the silhouettes of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. The hotel can arrange tickets to both landmarks on request, and guests can wander the surrounding countryside past the Königliche Kristall-Therme and St. Mang's Abbey before returning to the resort's garden terraces.
