THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg
Schloss Bensberg is a genuine castle, three floors and 111 rooms set above Bergisch Gladbach, four kilometres from the centre, with Mediterana, Cologne Zoo and the Cologne Triangle Panorama close enough for an afternoon out. Book a Domblick room or suite and the name says it plainly: windows facing toward Cologne's cathedral, a detail no city-centre hotel can replicate from four kilometres closer to the traffic. Outside there is a golf course, tennis court, mini golf and hiking trails; inside, an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam room and treatments in the hotel's own 4 elements spa cover the days the weather does not cooperate. Vendôme, one of two restaurants on site, carries the kitchen's ambition, backed by a bar, a cafe and a bakery, with gluten-free and vegetarian requests handled without fuss. Couples planning a wedding get an actual castle rather than a rented hall, and a business centre with conference rooms means the same building can host a Monday board meeting and a Saturday ceremony. Families travelling with children have a playroom, babysitting on request, and rooms sized for extra beds at 50 euros a night. Anyone hoping to walk into town for dinner should plan on the shuttle or a taxi instead; this is a destination in itself, not a base for wandering. Pets are welcome for a small fee, parking runs 34 euros a day, and check-in from 3pm gives housekeeping time to get a room ready properly rather than rushed. Come for the setting and the golf, not for proximity to anything. Schloss Bensberg is an actual castle above Bergisch Gladbach, four kilometres out, with rooms named for their view toward Cologne's cathedral, a golf course, and indoor and outdoor pools. It suits weddings, meetings and families with extra beds, less so anyone wanting to walk into town for dinner.

Schloss Bensberg markets itself as a wedding venue in its own right, with a dedicated page promising splendid celebrations inside the enchanting castle. The historic building's halls and grounds are positioned as the backdrop for guests planning a wedding rather than only an overnight stay.
