THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Malabar House
Malabar House occupies a Fort Cochin building that has passed through Dutch merchants, spice traders, tea traders and bankers since 1755, and the hotel keeps that layered history visible rather than polished away. Only 17 rooms sit across two floors, arranged less like a hotel and more like a private house that happens to take guests, with an art collection chosen to trace Kerala's position as a meeting point between East and West rather than to decorate a lobby. This suits someone who wants Fort Cochin's five hundred years of harbour history at walking distance and prefers the small, considered end of the scale to a resort with a hundred rooms and a schedule. It is not for anyone chasing anonymity or a big pool deck; there is a pool, indoor and outdoor, but the hotel's real currency is scale and attention, not square footage. What distinguishes it from the boutique properties around it is the 1997 claim: it was Fort Cochin's first boutique heritage hotel, and remains part of a Relais & Chateaux circuit rather than an independent one-off. Days can run from the spa, sauna and massage room to the restaurant's buffet or a picnic set up in the garden, with a fitness room and a conference hall for anyone mixing work with the trip. Staff speak English, German and Spanish, transfers can be arranged from the airport, and children have their own playroom, though the hotel does not take pets. Rooms vary from a compact double to suites over 600 square feet, but all of them sit inside the same walls that have stood since the mid-eighteenth century, which is the part no renovation can manufacture. A 1755 Fort Cochin building turned into Kerala's first boutique heritage hotel, now a 17-room Relais & Chateaux address with a curated art collection, a garden and a pool. Suits travellers who want history over scale; not for those wanting anonymity in a crowd.
