THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Buahan, A Banyan Tree Escape Bali
At Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape, the walls simply aren't there. Each of its 16 bales, the resort's version of a traditional Balinese pavilion, opens straight onto the highlands above the Ayung River valley, north of Ubud, with no doors between guest and jungle. Built in 2022 on a single floor in Buahan Kaja, the property gives every villa its own private pool: one sits above a hidden waterfall, another catches Bali's seven peaks at sunrise, a third overlooks rice terraces and river below. Rooms carry a mosquito net rather than blackout curtains, an indoor fireplace for cooler nights, and a bathtub that shares its view with the treeline. That absence of walls is the one thing setting Buahan apart from every other resort on the island; nothing here stands between a guest and the rainforest. The open-air Toja Spa draws on local healing traditions, the kitchen runs a zero-waste, plant-based menu, and pool access holds to fixed hours, 7am to 9.30pm. It suits people who want weather and birdsong folded into the stay, who don't need a locked door to feel at ease. It won't suit anyone travelling with children, since the resort is adults-only, or with pets, since none are allowed; couples sharing a room should also bring a marriage certificate, since the property may otherwise decline the booking. With only 16 bales on the property, availability is genuinely limited rather than a marketing line. Buahan doesn't offer distraction. There is nowhere here to hide from the forest, which is rather the point. Buahan has no walls and no doors, just 16 private-pool bales open to the Ayung River valley's rainforest, plant-based dining, and an open-air spa. It suits guests who want nature undiluted, not those travelling with children or pets, or without a marriage certificate for a shared room.
