THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Plein Hotel
Dinner at The Plein Hotel does not end when the plates are cleared. At Philipp's Restaurant & Club, Executive Chef Roberto Conti's Italian menu gives way, some nights, to a dinner show, and by half past eleven the room turns into a club that runs until four in the morning. That kind of range, from tasting menu to dance floor without changing address, would be unusual in a larger hotel. Here it happens inside thirteen rooms, tucked off Via Manin near Turati and the Villa Reale, where the designer Philipp Plein has built something closer to a private house than a chain property: a Japanese restaurant with a palm-lined garden bar, an all-day bistrot for breakfast through aperitivo, a conference hall for the rare guest who has a meeting to attend, and a sauna. Butlers unpack for guests who ask and arrange in-room spa treatments for those staying in the Spa Suites, and for travelers arriving with a dog, there is a hamper of toys, custom food, and turndown service extended to the animal and its owner. None of this suits anyone hoping to disappear into a lobby of two hundred rooms, or anyone who wants an early night, since the club runs past most dinner services. It suits people who want Milan's fashion energy without a lobby crowd, in a hotel small enough that a butler knows your room number by the second night. A cleaning tax and, where it applies, a mandatory gala dinner fee are settled at the hotel, not folded into the room rate. What stays with you afterward is not the design but the fact that nobody made you choose between quiet and loud. Thirteen rooms hold three restaurants, a club that runs to four a.m., and a White Glove service for dogs that includes turndown and a personalized hamper. It works for travelers who want Milan's fashion energy without a big lobby, and it works against anyone hoping for an early, quiet night.
