THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto
Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto sits in Higashiyama, close enough to Kiyomizu Temple and Yasaka Shrine that the walk there feels like part of the stay rather than an errand, with the Kyoto National Museum half a kilometer away and Sanjusangen-do Temple not much further. The hotel is built around its own pond garden, Shakusui-en, a feature none of the luxury hotels clustered nearer downtown can offer their guests. Inside, 177 rooms across five low floors keep the place feeling more like a residence than a hotel block; even the entry-level rooms run to 527 square feet, with down comforters, 55-inch televisions, deep soaking bathtubs and rainfall showerheads standard, and the top suite stretches past 760 square feet with a garden view. Two restaurants, including Emba Kyoto Chophouse, plus a cafe and bar, cover most moods without requiring a reservation elsewhere, and 24-hour room service covers the rest. The indoor pool keeps set hours, open from seven in the morning to nine at night, and the spa runs on advance booking for massage and treatments rather than walk-ins. Families get a playroom and babysitting on request; travellers who prefer their hotels compact and low-key should look elsewhere, since this one leans into scale, with a business center, event space and multilingual staff fluent in English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Pets under five kilos stay for a surcharge. Checkout at noon and check-in from three gives enough room either side for the pond garden to be seen without a schedule pressing in. Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto sits in Higashiyama, minutes from Kiyomizu Temple, built around its own pond garden, Shakusui-en, a rarity among the neighborhood's luxury hotels. Rooms start at 527 square feet with rainfall showers and deep soaking tubs. The pool keeps daytime hours only, and the spa needs booking ahead.

EMBA Kyoto Chophouse, led by Argentine-trained chef Sebastian Barcudes, serves dry-aged Japanese beef and charcoal-grilled seafood beside the hotel's 12th-century pond garden. Guests choose between a waterside terrace or an indoor dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the garden's seasonal cherry blossoms and autumn foliage.
