THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
HOTEL SHIKISAI KYOTO
Step off the single elevator at Hotel Shikisai Kyoto and the room number on your key tells you almost nothing about what you are about to find. One door opens onto Nuance, a Paris-inspired suite in blue with a king bed; another onto Hawaiian Chill, with a hanging chair and an overhead rain shower; a third onto Kinkaku, a Japanese suite lined in gold-leaf cloth for guests who want the city's own aesthetic rather than a borrowed one. With only eight rooms, no two nights here look alike, and that is the thing no other hotel in central Kyoto offers at this scale: a different concept behind every single door, from Arashiyama's cypress bathtub to Urban's Hollywood twin beds. Most rooms run close to 50 square metres, some with kitchens and washing machines, so a two-night stopover and a three-week stay get treated the same way. The rooftop, nicknamed the Icecream Garden for its dome-shaped nooks, is a quiet place to sit with a book before heading out to Nishiki Market or Nijo Castle, both under a mile away, with the Karasuma Oike subway station five minutes on foot. A 24-hour front desk, concierge and free Wi-Fi cover the practical side; there's no restaurant or bar, so this suits someone building their own Kyoto evenings rather than someone who wants a lobby to settle into. Couples switching rooms over a multi-night stay, solo travellers who like a strong design opinion, and longer-stay guests with laundry needs will get the most out of it. Anyone wanting uniform five-star polish or a large group booking identical rooms should look elsewhere. Pick your theme and stay a while. Eight rooms, eight entirely different worlds, from a Paris-blue suite to a gold-leafed Kyoto room with a cypress bath. Central, walkable, better suited to design-curious travellers and long stays than to anyone wanting matching rooms or a hotel bar.
