THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Nazuna Kyoto Gosho
A cup of coffee in the lobby here comes with a ceiling that still remembers being a warehouse for stacked lumber, the scale of the beams left exactly as the builders made them before Nazuna Kyoto Gosho turned two Kyomachiya townhouses into a seven-room guest house a stroll from the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Walk through and the lobby gives onto a Japanese garden that changes with the seasons, then continues into the second townhouse, where three more rooms sit beside a dining and lounge space used for breakfast and evening drinks. Each of the seven rooms is named for and themed around a wagashi, a traditional Japanese confection, down to two rooms, Kashiwa Mochi and Kuzukiri, that come with their own open-air or semi-open-air baths. Breakfast is cooked irori-style over a sunken hearth, the rice from a Kyoto merchant with roots in the Edo period. Marutamachi, the Manga Museum and Nijo Castle are all within walking distance. A concierge, tour desk, car rental and laundry service handle the logistics; a small spa and massage room handle the rest, alongside a bar, restaurant and free Wi-Fi. The 24-hour front desk covers late arrivals, with check-in from 3pm and check-out by 11am. This suits travelers drawn to quiet, detail-heavy Japanese craft over hotel scale, and it rules out families, since children 12 and under aren't accepted here. What it has that its neighbors don't is the combination: a converted lumber warehouse, a garden linking two historic houses, and rooms built one by one around a different sweet. A seven-room guest house inside two restored Kyoto townhouses, where each room takes its name and theme from a traditional confection and breakfast is cooked over a sunken hearth. No children 12 or under, and no shortage of quiet detail for everyone else.
